Dealing with a pc that is slow can be so annoying at times as it will slow down your work making you to spend unnecessary time.

How to speed up a slow running computer/laptop

This simple guide will show you how to fix a slow pc with steps that can be done in minutes and instantly deliver lasting results.

On this article we’ll be focus on windows, but there are other ways of speeding up a mac.

  1. A Reboot:

When your pc start running slow, it could be a clear sign that you need to restart you system, especially if it’s been used for a longer time without restart it.


Before you reboot your pc, first close all your programs and files then restart it. And also make sure you restart your computer any time you install or upgrade a software on your computer.

  1. Close System Tray Programs

Some applications tend to run in the notification area unknown to you and these applications often launch at startup and stayed running in the background.


On your desktop, click the up arrow icon near the system tray, right click any applications that you don’t need running in the background and close them. This will free up system resources.

  1. Software Updates:

Updating your system software is important as it keep your installed applications running smoothly and secure but on the other hand, some of these programs come with pre-installed automatic updates that is running in your background taking up the space on the hard drive.


Click on the start up menu on your computer, click on settings, navigate to updates & security and click on windows update.

  1. Update Hardware:

Most times some system hardware tend to slow down the speed of your computer. And the two main hardware related to the speed of a computer are your storage drive and your memory. So adding more memory or upgrading your storage space could go a long way to speed up your system performance.


  1. Many Active Programs Or Browser Tabs:

The number of programs or tabs on your browser you are running at a time will affect the speed of your computer because every open tab and every open program takes up a certain amount of space on your RAM which tend to reduce the speed of your computer if too much.


Only have those programs you are using at a moment running and only open the tabs you need to use at the moment on your browser.

  1. Get Rid Of Temp Files:

As you are making use of your computer, running programs, there is that tendency that temporary files are been stored on the hard drive. Deleting these temp files would help improve the performance of your computer.

Malwares are software that interferes with your web browser to track it and add additional advertisements causing the slowing of your pc.


To be on a safe side, scan your computer with an antivirus program. You can also scan it with malwarebytes, this will catch a lot of “potentially unwanted programs” that some antivirus will ignore.

  1. Old or outdated PC:

In some cases, your system may be too old and you have used it for so many years. Then running slow is more of a natural thing rather than a problem.

In this case, you only have these options of either purchase a new computer, update your computer’s hardware or better still accept working with a slow computer.
