Peter Obi Biography:

Peter Gregory Obi popularly known as ‘OKWUTE’ which means ‘ROCK’ is a prominent businessman and a politician. He is a native of Agulu in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He was born on 19th July, 1961(60 years) at Onitsha.

He had his Secondary Education at Christ the King College, Onitsha and afterwards, in 1980, he proceeded to University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he graduated with a B.A(Hons) in Philosophy in 1984. His love for education paved the way for him outdoors the shore of Nigeria to Ivy League and Oxbridge Faculties.

Peter Obi is happily married to Margaret Brownson Usen and their union is blessed with two children, Gabriella Nwamaka Frances Obi and Gregory Peter Oseloka Obi.

Margaret Obi is a native of Calabar, Cross River State in Nigeria. She is a Philanthropist and a business woman. She is the driving force behind her husband’s National Gender Affirmative Action, which ensured that women received at least half of the seats in Obi’s cabinet.

She also helped the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (MWAPD) established Family Courts to deal with child abuse and violations of women’s rights, including widows’ right to inheritance.

Peter Obi Political Career:

In 2003, Peter Obi with a noble intention of making his state, Anambra one of the best in the country, entered into politics under the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and contested for the position of Governor.

At the end of the election, his opponent, Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Peter Obi had recourse to the court and after three years, Ngigi was overturned by the Appeal Court on March 15, 2006.

On March 17, 2006, he was sworn in as Governor and was later impeached on November 2, 2006, while his Deputy, Virginia Etiaba took over as the Governor thus becoming the first female Governor in Nigeria.

Peter Obi is currently the Labour Party flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election. On May 30, 2022, Obi won the Labour Party’s presidential primary election that was held in Delta State. He received his Certificate of Return from the Labour Party as its 2023 presidential flag bearer on June 10, 2022.

Peter Obi have his Labour Party Vice Presidential Candidate (i.e a running mate). According to the Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, “for fairness, equity, and inclusion, Obi picked his running mate based on ‘Federal Character Principle’. He picked Datti Ahmed as his running mate.
